Lost item recovery
In this sport, the dog must find an item “lost” in the environment.
How it works
Lost item recovery is one of the events within the North American Sport Dog Association (NASDA). In this event, the dog must find one or more items hidden in the search area.
In the first level, the dog must find an item scented by the handler. The items used in this level are an item of clothing (e.g., glove, hat), keys, and a wallet. In the next level, the dog must find an item scented by another person. These items can be the same as the first level, but can be other things (e.g., glasses, pen, remote control, etc.). In addition in the second and higher levels, “decoy” items can also be in the search area. This means that the dog must distinguish between the item(s) to be recovered and those that are simply present in the environment.
Lost item recovery has uses in the “real world.” For example, if you lose your keys, you can ask your dog to find them for you.
Training
We start by “pairing” the lost items with food (or toys), so that the dog learns that finding the lost item is highly rewarding. We start with the handler’s odor and then move to more complicated scenarios, with items scented by other people and include “decoys” in the search area. We use a scented article to help the dog understand which odor to search for in the area. The dogs usually catch on pretty quickly — we give them an article to sniff and they go — yes, that’s the odor I’m looking for and they go find the item with the odor that matches. It’s amazing!
How It Works
the start
Most likely, you’ll start in a small class with 5-6 other dogs and handlers. We’ll take turns working with each dog and their handler’s scent.
Increasing difficulty
As the dogs learn the game, we’ll make it more challenging by having them find items “lost” by other handlers in the class. In addition, we’ll make the searches a bit more complicated.
Advanced searches
Eventually, the dogs will be finding multiple “lost” items in a search area that also includes “decoy” items, as well as more complicated scent pictures. This is where the dogs’ abilities really shine!
