In this sport, the dog must find at least one shed antler in the search area. At Level 1, the dog only needs to indicate that they’ve found the antler. In the higher levels, the dog MUST retrieve the antler (i.e., bring it to the handler).
Sheds

Typically, deer antlers are used, often with more than one prong. However, in some areas, larger antlers (e.g., moose or elk) are used. For smaller dogs, small sheds can be used. Under the latest rules, handlers can use their own sheds in trials.
Training the dog to retrieve antlers can be tricky, as the dog needs to learn how to pick up the antler without poking itself in the face or mouth with a prong. Dogs that naturally retrieve have an advantage, but still need to learn how to safely pick up the antler and return to the handler.
In Levels 1 and 2 (NASDA), the dog can be worked on a long line, but in Level 3 and above, the dog must work off-leash. The higher levels also include multiple sheds and have certain requirements regarding the retrieve (i.e., how close the dog must be to the handler).
How We Train
introductions
First, the dog must be introduced to the antler. Most dogs have never seen one before, so it sometimes takes a few rounds of introductions before the dog is comfortable interacting with an antler.
Training an Indication
Next, we work on an “indication,” which is simply a change in the dog’s behavior that shows the handler and judge (during a trial) that the dog has found the antler in the search area.
Advanced Training
If desired, we’ll work on developing a retrieve. This may take some time, as we will ONLY use positive methods to train (i.e., no forced retrieve methods). But, it will help keep the dog happily working and enjoying the sport.
